Moldova at the Crossroads...
People get to choose

Moldova at the Crossroads...The policy for the development of Moldova?s bilateral and multilateral relations arouses sincere interest on the part of the international community.

And it is no mere chance. What way will the free Moldova proceed along? What values will it choose? What will be important for the population of the republic, and what not? What effect will the events in the blooming and cheerful Moldova have on Europeans? life? Will not they have a negative influence on the socio-economic situation of neighbors? How and when will the crisis on the long-suffering land of Transdniestria be settled?

Answers to these and other questions in the period of the overcoming the world financial and economic crisis and the day before presidential election are actual ever more. All the more so that Moldova?s political elite has so far no single recipe to solve the above problems.

The general for Moldova?s political establishment is the ambition to overcome the world financial crisis consequences, strengthen mutually advantageous cooperation and good neighborly relations with its old and new partners.

At the present time two approaches to problems solution show up in the policy. The first one is directed to more intensive integration processes with the European Union, gradual exclusion of Russia, Ukraine, the USA from the peacekeeping process, withdrawal of Russian troops from the Transnistrian region according to the ?previous agreements?, replacement of Russian peace-keeping forces by an international mission of civil observers and strengthening of the role of OSCE in this process. And it is no mere chance that in one of his first interviews the elected for the position of Prime Minister of Moldova Vlad Filat declared: ?Withdrawal of Russian troops from the Transnistrian region must be carried out according to the previous agreements... It is no good, when each nominated government fixes the date of this contingent withdrawal from the Transnistrian region.?

The second one is aimed at establishing friendly and mutually advantageous relations with its strategic partners, first of all, with members of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Much attention is given to solution of native population?s social problems, early peaceful solution of problems of the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova.

The acting President of Moldova Mihai Ghimpu at the meeting with the President of the Russian Federation on October 9 of this year declared for the development and enhancement of relations with the Russian Federation, improvement of the well-being of the citizens living both in Moldova and in Russia.

Marian Lupu, leader of the Democratic Party of Moldova supports M.Ghimpu?s views and actively comes out for the development of relations with the CIS countries on principles of predictability, stability and sincerity.

Typical of the first approach is striving for a compulsory and quick settlement of the existing problems. And an opinion of the leadership and population of Transdniestria is not taken into account at that.

Typical of the second approach is the position of weighed, gradual, successive and progressive settlement of the existing contradictions. An opinion of the population and leadership of the unrecognized republic is substantial and must be obligatory taken into account during negotiation process.

Moldova?s future will also depend on what approach will be chosen. Either the region will be stable, problem-free and prosperous, or we will become again witnesses of the April ?revolutionary events?, will hear again shots and explosions in the quiet streets of Moldavian cities.
